For your class SPOOKTACULAR PARTY I’m about to show you an interactive and engaging game that promotes confidence, curiosity, and MAGIC, that will make your Halloween party an unforgettable hit.

The game includes tea staining paper, writing, artwork, Halloween history, scares, and performance.

And the best thing is that you can string this game out throughout the whole school day!

BEFORE WE BEGIN…

We often forget that the act of TRICK OR TREATING used to mean ‘show me a trick and THEN I’ll give you a treat’. We now simply dress up and expect some candy… and it can be SO much more entertaining! For this reason I made a video of ‘tricks’ that you can perform to impress and WOW your friends for Halloween, and actually be REWARDED with your treat.

PREPARE THE CLASS

Pre-warn the class that there will be a ‘show and tell’ for Halloween. Explain the story of Trick or Treating and they should all try and find a Party Trick to show the class!

At the bottom of this blog are 7 EASY Party Tricks that you can teach the kids in the run up to the BIG DAY! Of course, alternatively the pupils can come up with their own party tricks to show at the party too.

Stress that they will ALL perform their TRICK in order to gain the TREAT!

ON THE DAY

To prepare for the party you will need:

⭐️ A cauldron that contains at least 1 balloon per child in the class (orange preferred as they will be ‘pumpkins’ allow extra for accidental popping)

⭐️ A balloon pump (and the ability to tie balloons)

⭐️ Paper slips, around the size of a business card (tea-stained for extra bonus CREEPY points. You could use this TEA STAINING as a class task in the run up to the party.)

⭐️ An alarm or timer for each segment (the alarm could be a spooky fun song or a Wilhelm scream... get creative!)

And now…

THE TRICKS AND PUZZLES

Vanishing coin

You’re sitting around the dinner table and the spooky magician magically vanishes a coin from under a glass!

YOU WILL NEED:
a coin

class

tin foil

2 sheets of coloured card

Scissors

HOW?

On one sheet of card draw around the opening of the glass and cut out that circle.

Stick the circle to the opening of the glass and turn it upside down on top of the other sheet of card. This creates an invisible barrier – a secret compartment, if you will – when you can hide something flat, like a coin!

11 Fingers

Prove you have 11 fingers in 3 ways!

YOU WILL NEED

10 fingers

A sausage

This is based on some sneaky wordplay and maths. Hold both hands up.

1. First you are going to use one hand to count backwards, using your fingers, from 10 - 6. Then on your other hand, you count upwards 1 – 5. You finish up by saying ‘6+5 is? 11!’

2. Next, hold up both your hands again, and you are going to count upwards, starting at 1, putting your finger down at each number BUT you are going to add the number 8 after each number (sneakily skipping 8/8). When you say it out loud you will see how easy it is!

3. Now when everyone is either trying to figure out what on earth you just did, or rolling on the floor laughing, you pick up a sausage (that you had secretly in your pants pocket) and put it between your middle fingers on one hand. Hold up your hand, show 11 fingers and take a BIG BITE out of the sausage.

Walk through paper

Ghosts can walk through walls, but can YOU walk through a piece of paper?

Challenge everyone to cut one hole and ONE HOLE ONLY in a piece of A4 paper, big enough to fit their whole body through! Sound impossible right? Not when you know this sneaky pattern here!

Mind reading

You, as the magician, are going to predict a number that you had NO control over!

Dancing Stick Skeleton

This is super simple and SUPER FUN!

Grab a dinner plate and dry-wipe marker. With the marker, dry a stick person (or skeleton) in the middle. Now gently pour a few drops of water on the stick person and watch them come to life, dancing around the plate on the body of water. This may take a few times to perfect, when you do, you will be pleasantly surprised!

The Whimsical World of Balloon Dogs

The town of Swindon in the UK was recently treated to a delightful art installation featuring over 70 giant balloon dog sculptures. The ‘Big Dog Art Trail’ brightened up the town and brought joy to over 23,000 visitors. The balloon dogs ranged in size from small puppies to massive hounds and were designed by various artists in all colors of the rainbow.

Two of the most popular pooches were a metallic butterfly-covered dog named ‘Papillon’ and a massive hound that towered over visitors. While a couple of the balloon dogs faced minor damage during the show, they were quickly repaired and back to spreading cheer in no time.

After bringing the community together for weeks of canine-inspired fun, the balloon dogs will now be auctioned off to support the wonderful charity Julias House Children’s Hospice. The charity hopes to raise over $200,000 from the sale to help seriously ill children and their families. The event was so popular that locals want to make it an annual attraction.

Much like the heartwarming kids book ‘ The Best Balloon Dog in the World ,’ the Big Dog Art Trail brought joy and wonder to all who experienced it. Public art installations are a fantastic way to lift community spirit while also supporting great causes. The balloon dogs of Swindon were no exception. 2 Balloon Pass

Balloon game #6 from the Balloon Party Extraordinaire

You will need:

- 2 balloons (the larger the better)

- 1 bell and / or whistle, optional

The Play:

Two balloons are passed around a circle of seated children.

In opposite directions! When the bell rings, both balloons

switch directions.

Variations:

- WHISTLE: Add in the whistle. When it sounds the

kids holding the balloons swap places with each

other, then continue passing in the direction they

were going in.

- SCRAMBLE: Shout the word ‘SCRAMBLE’ for

everyone to switch places to a different seating

position within 5 seconds.

- Footsie: Get all the kids to lie on their backs and only

use their feet to pass the balloon.

Balloon Game #5 from The Balloon Party Extraordinaire

An absolute, all-round favourite with all ages!

You will need:

- 1 round balloon - the bigger the better!

The Play:

Get all the kids to stand in a circle and turn to their right so

they are looking at the back of the next person’s head.

Player 1 holds the balloon.

The balloon is passed with 2 hands over their head to the

person behind. That person passes the balloon through

their legs.

Repeat ad infinitum or add some rules…

I like to go with a ‘world record balloon pass’ attempt.

Count how many kids there are and change that to a

number of ‘seconds(*)’. Say that the world record is (*)

seconds and they have to beat that time!

Variation:

- Advanced Over-Under - use 2 balloons!

The Olympic Torch

Balloon Game #4

You will need:

- Balloons

- Party Hats

- Leaf Blower (optional)

The Play:

The Party Hat plays the role of ‘Olympic Torch’, but sadly it

is unlit! The player must hurry to ‘light the torch’ by catching

a flame (balloon) in the upturned hat.

Use a leaf blower to blow balloons all over the place (but try

to keep them up in the air).

When the torch is lit the children will hold their arm up in

the air like an Olympic athlete. The first 3 get awarded the

Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

Variations:

- You can make it harder by ‘accidentally’ pointing the

leaf blower in the ‘general direction’ of a balloon on

the cusp of being caught. Look coy.

Balloon Game 3

You will need:

- Balloons everywhere!

- Bell / whistle contraption (see Pick and Put - game 2)

The Play:

Get everyone to walk around the space in the character of

their favourite Pokemon (or animal). They can slither, crawl,

light-footedly romp, fly, anything at all.

When you, the ‘Ringmaster’, RINGS the bell, every child

grabs as many balloons as they can!

They can hold them in their arms, put them up their

jumpers, down their sleeves, in their socks - everywhere!

This is great for photo opportunities so let the

paparazzi-parents know.

Variations:

- Play as a team game: each team nominates 1 player

to hold onto as many balloons as possible with the

team's help.

An entertaining session of magic and tomfoolery for kids with great special effects

Last year Magic Gareth presented ‘Man Vs Balloon: The Family Magic Show’ at CC Blooms as part of the Free Fringe. With Edinburgh Fringe online this year, Gareth has developed a new show that reaches through the Zoom screen to engage the kids at home in his magic.

The show starts with a countdown so that kids can get ready. There is a cute opening with a Pac-Man-style video game character. An avatar named Cookie, Magic Gareth’s online assistant, begins the presentation with a mind reading game, which is quite clever.

Magic Gareth then appears in the traditional top hat and magician’s vest. After warming up the audience, he has the kids doing magic with him, teaching them magic words. There are some old stand-by tricks, some close up magic, and the obligatory balloon animal.

What sets this show apart from other online kids events are the production values and his vibrant personality. The virtual set is very colourful and attractive. He effectively uses animation and sound effects. Magic Gareth take common props to a new level with contemporary references. He has lots of energy, bright eyes, and good facial expressions.

This is an interactive family magic show. Doing a Zoom show is challenging. Magic Gareth has some good strategies to cultivate participation. He instructs kids keep their cameras on, telling them that he will request people to unmute at various points. He has everyone unmute their Zooms to make noise, then mutes them when he is delivering a routine. All the time everyone can see each other, which adds to the sense of audience energy.

It’s all wrapped up in a neat 35 minutes that the little ones will enjoy.

Low Down

Magic Gareth provides an online children’s magic show that has lost none of its luster to provide us with a magical experience that runs through mentalist tricks, disappearing hankies, badly built (by design) balloon animals, a game of higher or lower and the cloak of invincibility. A feast of misdirection and illusion, it takes that which should be close up and socially distances it with aplomb.

Review

I have always thought that to do magic, you need to sell it well. To be successful it needs a big personality behind it to tell the story, drive the narrative and make it all happen, in front of our very eyes. Magic Gareth has it in bucket loads. There is a clear and authentic voice working its way into the magic as he clearly loves the job of entertaining children.

I would perhaps have liked a better overview narrative that would have held it all together better as the holiday choice was good but trying to get away and why would have strengthened the whole process. Having said that, you know what, I am old and wrinkly, and the fresh faced in the audience seemed not to mind one jot! The interaction was well done and the way this was developed as an interactive online experience heightened its effect considerably.

I did like the way that the graphics and Cookie were used at the beginning, the scene behind him gave him the perfect platform and the use of Alexa in one of the audience’s home was a neat way of getting people to be enthralled.

Whilst I do love kid’s stuff, I cannot overdose on them too much in one day, but I shall certainly be looking out for Magic Gareth when the lockdown is finally done. He has a way of keeping children enthused whilst not being condescending but still playing homage to the traditions of his craft.

Whole articles have been written about how tiring Zoom can be – so hats off to Gareth White (aka Magic Gareth) for flooding our living rooms with energy via the computer screen. Ordinarily, White would deliver his show in person, wowing families with his close-up magic. But, having recognised that online will be the preferred platform for some time, he’s reinvented himself.

Since April, Magic Gareth has performed over 300 virtual shows, bringing much-needed joy to locked-down parties. Some of that joy is generated by children enjoying a shared experience in one "room” – and much the same can be said for this show.We’re asked to consider keeping our cameras on, and while there’s no pressure to do so, a definite spark comes from seeing other families react and interact. White is a natural showman, boisterousness and fun yet warm and friendly when eliciting help with a trick.

The tricks themselves, like all the best magic, fall largely into the “how on earth did he do that?” category. Items appear, disappear or change colour and some clever mind-reading takes place. Magic that goes “wrong” leads to great call-backs later, and the whole thing is neatly wrapped up before anyone can fall foul of Zoom fatigue. Kelly Apter

Magic Gareth Live! – Review

August in Scotland. The only four days of sun you’ll experience, no one seems to be wearing a shirt and of course the much beloved or dreaded Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Well… perhaps not this year. Or just maybe, with a little bit of luck and determination, a certain few will shine through and stage their own events. A local favourite, Gareth White has taken to digital performances throughout Lockdown, conducting well over 300 shows. Now, Magic Gareth Live! seeks to deliver that quality Fringe experience to newcomers and a few dab-hands.

Now, remember, if you can’t figure out the trick – well, that’s half the fun. Gareth’s repertoire primarily concerns the classics, with a couple of unique or digital twists (extra points for the Disney references). Chiefly aimed for the tots of the home, Gareth’s charismatic style is evidently targeting the family bracket, but don’t let those puns fool you – there’s some wit behind those cheeky grins. It’s entertainment for everyone, with enough back and forth discussion to involve adults and equally capture their sense of awe.

A compact routine, just over half an hour, Magic Gareth Live! fills a tremendous amount of jovial fun into the timeslot, more than enough to set those imaginations ablaze for the rest of the day. Personal, the Zoom feature shows Gareth control of the room, including any kids who want to get involved and have their days made or allowing those quieter tots to branch out a little and still involve themselves in their own way.

What’s particularly wonderful is Gareth’s refusal to cop-out a cheap get-away with a green screen. It’s there as a projection tool, to create a charming spellcaster’s locale rather than offer quick illusions or short-cuts in the magic. Technical wizardry only makes a brief appearance in a couple acts, while the remainder of Gareth’s set is a fine welcome to the world of the mystical as any tiny ones can hope for (and a way for the old fans to brush-up).

Sleight-of-hand, sleeves, and top hats, and even a jolly holiday – Magic Gareth Live! is a Fringe-lite experience without dealing with the crowds, heat, and expensive baked potatoes. Ideal for kids stuck at home, struggling to find a sparkle in their day-to-day activities, this live experience may be precisely the sort of jolt of energy they require.

It’s a few days ‘till the best birthday party ever! Here are a few things to think about before the big day.

1. MUSIC

Magic Gareth will bring Music. However if the party is planned for longer, make sure that you have music to go.

Edinburgh Magic Show: The first Thursday of the month is the new Friday?

When was the last time you went clubbing in Edinburgh? I went out last night - it was a Thursday…

At 8pm last night, I was invited to open Season 2 of the Edinburgh Magic Show! It took place in Lulus nightclub under Tigerlily on George Street, Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh Magic show brings together the very best of Scottish magic - both, the the up and comers and the full time pros - into an intimate space where you sit so close to the performer that you can happily forget you glasses and miss not a thing!

You will witness the most amazing, incredible and wonderous trickery in the business. Anything goes - magic, mentalism, Rubik’s cubes, balloons, water pistols...

This night featured the supremely talented Rubik’s Cube magician, Adam Black, the mind melter Cameron Gibson and the self proclaimed ‘old guy of the night’, world famous trickster Ian Kendall. And me!

Attention! I have attended 2 wedding fairs as a supplier. 200 companies from around Scotland flow into the Edinburgh Corn Exchange twice a year to pedal their goods to YOU for YOUR wedding day! You can find free champagne tastings, facials, wedding cars, donuts and the best of all Scottish entertainment available – like me!

This year I am sitting in between a donut Stand ++++ and Sarah Harpist++++. This means that when people watch be perform at this Wedding Fair I am accompanied by some spectacular harp tunes and high-end snacks are provided to all my tickets holders.

And this year my guests had a ball!

Think you don’t need a magician on your wedding day? Think again! When you are away having your photos taken amongst the sunflowers , your guests are twiddling their thumbs awaiting your return and the impending speeches and food! Some of them know each other, some of them don’t. That is where I come in. There are myriad activities you can do for a party. A quick google search will take you to a kaleidoscopic melee of fairy princesses, foam parties, character mascots, face painters, trampolines… You could go down the DIY route and set up an arts and craft table party. You may have a ginormous garden space to accommodate a bouncy castle, or even a petting zoo!

The list of party options is fairly endless and it is possible to be persuaded and sucked into buying multiple activities and assorted entertainers for your party. Perhaps you want a DJ, a face painter, and a bouncy castle. Or even a jumbo Minion Mascot, in a ball pit and a fully orchestrated water pistol fight.

Now, I totally get it, feeding popcorn to a goat in a flowery hat is fun. A bouncy castle is eye-catching, inviting and colourful!

But in reality a ‘bounce house’ can only accommodate up to 10-12 kids at a time so what do you do with the kids who can’t get on it? You will need other entertainment to supplement so maybe you do need the goat and maybe some chickens too! You will need some music too, loud enough to be heard over the castle air-pump, and the animals clucking and bleeting. Perhaps a craft table would be nice too! It is uniquely personal, but, again this requires a lot of extra purchasable bits and bobs and extra adult parental supervision.

Take a step back and breathe. Put all the indiscriminate options to the side.

Now consider an all round entertainment package in the form of the family entertainer.

The sole focus of the family entertainer is for everyone to have as good a time as is possible – one job, one person – entertainment for everyone! Thats their job. It is all-encompassing and its the full package .

No need for multiple bills, or multiple licenses to check up on, no need to coordinate times for delivery of the castle which clashes with feeding time at the zoo. One phone call to one person is all it takes. There is no need to hire anyone else when you hire Magic Gareth.

Just a few things to think about for your upcoming party:

Enjoy the process – this is going to be a great party!
Time of party – most common times are 10-12/ 2-4pm on Saturday and Sunday
Choose a venue – home or away?
Theme? So many to choose from and can add some extra colour to the party – superheros, favourite character, Unicorns…
Guest list – how many mouths do you want to feed? This will also depend on your venue (above)
The invitations – birthdays happen all the time so get in early to make sure you get your desired date.
A birthday cake to feed the number of invites.
Remember to enjoy the party!
Party bags with gifts?
Book Magic Gareth to take the pressure off so you can do number 8! (in fact, this should be number 1, so do this first!)

And some bonus thoughts!

Remember your camera – once Magic Gareth has been hired, you can now sit back and enjoy the show. Take photos and videos to remember the big day. I am there to entertain everyone and keep this as easy and relaxed for you as possible.
Prepare for the unexpected – rain, power outage, first aid kit. WHAT IF you want to have the party outside? It may rain, it may start to shine and be very warm. Have a backup – perhaps a neighbors house or an emergency canopy. Sun tan lotion for the kids if we do get the sunshine!
Have a gifts table and think about waiting until home time for the un-opening. Also, take notes on who the gift is from!!
